Artistic Director: Kris Fleerackers

Kris Fleerackers grew up in Flanders, Belgium, a quirky little country with strong traditions of art, comics, pageantry and puppets.
After studying literature and theatre at the university of Antwerp, he obtained an MA in Performance Studies at New York University under the tutelage of Richard Schechner; the program included seminars and workshops with such groundbreaking artists as Jerzy Grotowsky, Augusto Boal, Eugenio Barba, Laurie Anderson, Mary Beth Edelson, Donna Hennes and Spalding Gray. Recently, he took puppetry intensives with Peter Balkwill of The Old Trout Puppet Workshop and at Toronto’s Humber College, where he also took masterclasses in object theatre and puppet construction.
Kris has worked as a director, actor, dramaturge, writer and educator; he has performed with Bread and Puppet Theatre and collaborated with Vancouver’s Public Dreams Society. He has also built and animated puppets for community events and created props, sets and costumes for the stage as well as for television, including gangster matryoshkas, an Ice Age cave wall and prehistoric slippers…
After moving to Canada twenty three years ago Kris pursued a daytime career as an editor, video journalist and television producer. He recently left his position at CBC/Radio-Canada to return full-time to live performance and puppetry. He has always hoped for an opportunity to combine puppets with his other great passion, baroque music, so Dido & Aeneas, the Puppet Version is a dream come true…
